What Is Spinal Decompression, and Could It Help You?
If you've been dealing with chronic back or neck pain, sciatica, or a diagnosed disc problem, you may have come across spinal decompression as a treatment option. It's one of the services we offer at Hiers Chiropractic, and it's worth understanding what it actually does before deciding if it's right for you.
What Spinal Decompression Therapy Is
Spinal decompression is a non-surgical therapy that uses gentle, controlled traction to relieve pressure on the spine. Rather than a quick pull, it works through a slow, mechanically controlled stretch and release cycle designed to create space between the vertebrae.
How It Works
During a session, you're fitted with a harness around your pelvis and trunk and positioned on a specialized table that applies motorized traction in gentle cycles. As the vertebrae separate slightly, it creates a negative pressure, almost a vacuum effect, inside the disc. That pressure change can help draw bulging or herniated disc material back toward its normal position and allows oxygen, water, and nutrients to move back into the disc, which supports the body's own healing process.
Conditions It May Help
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Degenerative disc disease
- Sciatica and other nerve-related leg or arm pain
- Chronic low back or neck pain that hasn't responded to other conservative care
- Pinched nerves related to disc or joint compression
What a Session Feels Like
Most patients describe spinal decompression as a gentle stretching sensation rather than anything painful. Sessions are typically short, and a full course of care usually involves a series of visits over several weeks, since the goal is gradual, cumulative relief rather than a single fix.
Is It Right for You?
Spinal decompression isn't the right fit for everyone. It's generally not recommended for pregnant patients or people with certain fractures, advanced osteoporosis, or spinal hardware, which is why a proper evaluation matters before starting care. At Hiers Chiropractic, we assess your history, imaging, and symptoms to determine whether decompression, chiropractic adjustments, or a combination of therapies makes the most sense for your specific condition.
